PROPOSED PGD PROGRAMME

 

IN THE

 DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY AND INTERNATIONAL STUDIES

Philosophy

The programme is designed to assuage the yearnings of graduates from other disciplines in the Arts and Social Sciences desiring to study history and international studies.

 

Objective

It is designed to produce highly competent historians with highly developed sense of balance and considerable depth and breadth of knowledge of the local and international community. The products of the programme are expected to be able to continue the study of history for the Masters degree as well as assume leadership role in the task of nation-building, in teaching and research; in administration and management, in foreign affairs etc. The courses are designed to expose and train the students in critical, rational thinking and judgment; in the rule of evidence as basis of informed judgement.

 

Scope

The Department of History & International Studies offers postgraduate programmes leading to the award of PGD degree in History and International Studies in the following major areas:

 

  • History
  • International Studies
  • Archival Studies

 Mode of study for PGD Programme

To be awarded the PGD degree, candidates must have taken and passed the required number of courses selected from the provided list, and 25 units as follows:

Core Courses     – 20 units

Project               –   5 units

Total                  –   25 units

 

In all cases, PGD students MUST write and submit to the department a project duly supervised by a lecturer in the Department.

 

Entry requirement for PGD Programme

  1. Graduate of the University of Nigeria or of other recognized University who have obtained the appropriate degree of Bachelor of Arts in History with at least Third Class or related disciplines in Arts and Social Sciences with at least second class honours or its equivalents.

 

Duration study

  1. Duration of PGD Programme

Full-time = 12 calendar months

Part-time= 18 calendar months

Course Description

HD512: Social Movements and Conflicts in Nigeria: The course examines the task of nation building in Nigeria from the Jihad to the Civil War as well as developments after the civil war – religious and political disturbances to the era of terror. 2

 

HD511 International Law and Diplomacy: The course concerns itself with the analysis of major global problems during the Cold War, the collapse of the Soviet Union, Peace and Security in the Middle East, the world after September 11, 2001, the Non-Aligned Movement, the disarmament treaties, racism, drugs and international terrorism. It discusses also environmental issues, population explosion, foreign aids, poverty and brain drain in developing nations.      2

 

HD501 Introduction to History: The course examines the concept of history as the very essence of human thought and the ultimate base of all disciplines. It also discusses the relationship of history and other disciplines in the humanities and the social sciences as well as its subject matter, nature, principles and uses generally, and as training and a profession. It analyses perspectives on world politics, including the politics of security, dominance and dependence.          2

 

HD502 International Politics since 1945: The course examines the concept of Cold War, the Arms Race, the fall of Communism and the uni-polar world.                                                                                2

HD521: Capitalism, Communism and Mixed Economy: This course examines the three types of economic system of capitalism, communism and mixed economy, highlighting the modes of production and distribution and the problems associated with each type.                                                                                                               2

HD531: History of the Middle East: This course examines the history of the Middle East, highlighting the effects of the Second World War on the Ottoman Empire, the creation of Israel and the attendant problems. The Suez crisis, the Arab League, Oil and International Politics and the new world trend of accord, are also analysed.                         2

 

HD522: The Military in African Politics: This examines reasons for military incursion in the politics of African states since the 1960s.                                                                                                                            2

HD541: Research Methodology: The nature sources and use of history. Origins and Development of historical studies up to 1900; Major 20th century philosophers of history; Old and new African historiography and Research methods.           2

 

HD504-The African Diaspora: This course is a historical study of the Black communities found outside Africa. It examines the origin of the Diaspora , the nature of the Black people’s experiences and interactions in the Diaspora, race relations, social, cultural, economic and intellectual contribution of Blacks to world civilization. The underlying cultural unity or similarities among the Black peoples and their role in contemporary world affairs are also discussed.                2

 

HD533- Globalization and the New World Order: The course examines globalization and the North – South Dialogue on Development; NEPAD and its potential for African development                                         2

 

HD503 – Nigeria since the civil war: The course examines developments in Nigeria since the Nigeria/Biafra War.  2

 

HD 523 – European International Relations since 1815: It is designed to cover developments in Europe from the end of the Napoleonic era in Europe to the Second World War.                                                           2

 

HD524 – West Africa before 1800: The course is a survey of developments of the West African Kingdoms and empires, the internal factors of change such as politics, agriculture, industry, trade and inter-group relations, as well as external factors of the Arab and Europeans, including the role and impact of Islam, Christianity, trade, colonialism, independence and the current struggle for survival.                                                                                                        2

 

HD501 – Introduction to the study of foreign policy: The course interrogates the very essence of the study of foreign policies and its relationship to political governance.                                                                        2

 

HD 521 – Theories of Imperialism and Nationalism: The course interrogates the different theories of imperialism and nationalism as they influence relations across people of different strata.                              2

 

HD 513 – Introduction to Strategic Studies: This course examines the nature and goals of strategic studies and other factors in the contest of nations.                                                                                                  2

 

HD 504 – Pan Africanism: The course involves studies in African consciousness and moves towards total decolonization of the African continent.                                                                                                       2

 

HD512 – Civil Wars and Conflicts in Africa: This course examines the internecine conflicts that bedevil the African continent since the 1960s.                                                                                                              2

HD522 – Non-State Actors in International politics This examines the roles of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) and transnational corporations (TNCs), in international politics.        2

 

HD551 Introduction to Archival Studies: Theories of archival administration, value of records, differences between archival records and library and museum, special type of records, preparation of finding aids-guide, storage of archives and problems.

 

HD561 -Evolution of Archival Practices: This examines the evolution of archival practices and development in France, United Kingdom, USA, USSR, Nigeria as well as international cooperation in Archives.                  2

 

HD571 – Foundations of African Culture and Civilization: This will dwell on a survey of African civilization from the Egyptian, Meroe,….                                                                                                        2

 

HD581 – Archival Record Management: This course lays emphasis on current, semi-current and non-current archival records as well as the challenges of storage and arrangement of records.                                        2

 

HD 541 – Study of Original Documents:  This involves the examination of archival documents to discover their authenticity as either originals, drafts, or copies.                                                                                      2

 

HD 531 – Research Methodology: A detailed discussion of available sources of information, the methods of collecting, analysing and evaluating archival and historical data.                                                         2

HD552 – Archival Studies and Information Technology: The course examines the role of information technology in archival record keeping.                                                                                                               2

HD 562 – Nigeria Peoples and Culture: This is a survey of the different Nigerian groups and how they have evolved over time as well as their points of convergence.                                                                              2

HD562 -Conservation & Reprography: Examines writing material through the ages; causes of decay of paper; enemies of record-keeping; care of records; maintenance of records.                                                    2

HD572 – Industrial Attachment: The student has to acquire a two-month industrial experience from an archival institution.  2
